Australian Karting Forum

Hello,

Just recently it has come to my attention that in order to race a dd2 kart, or even practice in it on your own on AKA tracks you must have at least a B grade licence(or is it A?). In my opinion I think that this is rubbish and that the fact someone cant race their $10k gearbox kart because they haven't done a million races in another class is ridiculous. If any of you are familiar with car racing, the CAMS licence system allows you to jump straight into an F3 and race it, provided you have satisfied several officials in your OLT. Unlike the, in my opinion, pointless OLT's in karting. Has anyone ever failed one in the history of karting?

So what do you guys think, does having the OLT determine whether or not you race in the faster class seem much better than the AKA's current system? I think so.

Cheers

Ryan

I just started karting again after a break. The only karting i had really done before was mainly practice with only two races in clubman heavy as a teenager(had to stop due to lack of funds). I finished both previous races. Then coming back found out that the fastest thing I could drive was tag restricted or clubman. This I was told because it's too powerful without the restrictor even though I had a current cams licence (entry level only). Having had 170hp sportsbikes that weigh 165kg that you can ride in a track this seemed amusing. Anyway i think the p plate setup is good as starting at the back gets you to observe and try and work your way through the field and learn some race craft. But the restrictor seems a bit pointless especially when there are too many classes and then people don't want to go unrestricted . Maybe keeping gearbox for people who have more experience is fair enough as costs of fixing things is higher and gives people something to aim for in their karting future. I would like to see a 110% rule in qualifying. Lets face it if you can't do a lap that takes someone else on the same equipment 50 second s in 55 seconds you need some practice. Other than those gripes the current system doesn't seem to bad at the end of the day all you have to do is race to get upgraded so get out there and have some fun.

That's a sticking point as this attitude is what has cost heavily. some people have a local track and recreational kart with mates. Same as your sports bike, you have many occasions to go to various track ride days.

This from a few years back, that day there was a few karts. Some recreational KT100s out there too with no clutch. Very rarely anyone gets hurt and it doesn't get much more dangerous in some peoples eyes. In reality, i felt pretty safe out

Fair call would be good if there was an avenue to try things out in a safe environment would help out with knowing what to get aswell.
