I want to use axle collars because I have had problems with XS 50 mm axles slipping in the past. I have been told they solve this problem and negate the use of grub screws or at least overtightening grub screws and stuffing the soft axle.

I have been told to place one inside or inboard, each of the two outer bearings. This isnt a problem on the engine side but it doesn't seem to me there is enough room between the disc hub and the inside of the left hand bearing ( looking at the kart from behind). I have a Monaco X1 with the X1 disc hub.

The second option I have been advised is to run the collars on the outside of the bearings, but you cant run them flush otherwise they will rub against the bearing bolts, if you mount them lets say 1mm away from the bearing bolts if the axle does slip one of them will be rubbing against the bearings bolts.

Can you mount them inboard of the engine side bearing and almost directly alongside next to the third ( middle bearing. This would prevent left or right slip but does it change the overall load on the axle. Also if the run up against the third bearing this probably tightens the bearing which if you are running it loose negates the effect.

I am not very good with this technical stuff so forgive my ignorance but anyone with any solutions.

Thanks

Yes you can use them between the two bearings on the right, but you can also look into machining the collars down to a size where they will fit.

Thanks Michael. Machining sounds a biy tricky for a numpty like me . So you reckon putting between the two bearings on the right is oK. That sounds like a nice easy solution.

What about flipping the left hand bearing around so it faces outwards. I've been told that works as it creates the space for the  collar. But thought that would effect the flexing of the axle on the left hand side? Anyone any further thoughts?

cheers

I don't like the idea of running them both over on the right. When you're taking a right hand corner, rather than the axial load coming down the axle pushing into the left side of the chassis, it'll be pushing OUT the right side of the chassis...

Does that make a difference? Dunno, I've never tested it. But it kinda feels like it would! :)

If you can afford the expense, grab some SKF concentra bearings

Thanks Col. So you reckon flipping the left bearing doesn't have any effect on the axle flex on the left hand side. I would have thought having an extra lump of metal hanging outside the bearing carrier approx 20mm ( that's as technical as my tech speak gets :-) would have effected it.

Adam- just bought 3 bearings from K Racer, so don't want to bin them. Yet . I assume the SKF bearings are thinner /flusher to the bearing carrier. How much are they?

Here's another thought about 50mm XS/Super soft axles slipping. I had lots of issues previously in leopard with yellows. Now in CSH on reds the load on the axle may not be as great and the problem may not occur. Anyone have any experience with 50mm slipping in clubman. maybe I am worrying unduly.

Thanks for all your help.

Hey Simon

I have been running a Super Soft Prodezine recently and have had no issue with the axle slipping. Only lost a grub screw or two (blame the pit crew myself).

Thanks Stu, now we know how you got you Number 1 plate. There'll be a big rush on Prodezine axles now!!!!

Interesting you have had no problems. I am guessing a Prodezine Super Soft maybe harder than a DPE XS becuase I never lost grub screws but when you tighten them they crush the axle. Mate, I had so many problems, everyone taking the piss about not tightening the grub screws etc. In the end I gave up and got Kip to tighten them becuase I couldn't  believe what was going on. And yes the axle slipped again. Hence my keeness to try the collars- if I can get the bastards to fit!

See you at the track some day.

+1

Short term expensive (more than $100.00 each!) - long term a very elegent, reliable and common sense solution!

Furz, the Concentra's are around $200 each - no, that's not a misprint.

They clamp the axle in place, no need for grub screws or collars.  Search on google and you'll see what's going on.

They also feature removable shields (very exciting, I know, couldn't contain myself when I found out).  ;)

I've been using them for a while now and they are pretty posh.  Only drama I've found is doing axle swaps - the engine side bearing is a bitch to "release" from the axle 'cos the collar grabs it so hard.

Yet to find an easy way to do it.

Anyone?

Why don't you ask Edgar??

Be better than asking a so called expert mouth from arrow .From a arrow user

If you take out the right hand brake pad you will be able to move the disc over so you can fit the collar in than move the disc back to the right spot it fits just
