It is with deep regret that I pass on the tragic news of the loss of one of our families from the Mackay Kart Club.
On Australia day Peter Burridge, wife Dianne, son Mark & daughter Kristy were involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident near Etna Creek on the Bruce Highway just north of Rockhampton. It was a cruel irony that they were travelling south to attend the funeral for Peter's father.
The event has shaken the members of the local community and in particular the kart club of which they were members. Mark had been racing in the club in JNH for the last two years and they were regular attendees at all meetings over the last 24 months.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Peter over the period as my son commenced racing at the same time and we endured the monthly difficulty of standing together while our sons regularly, albeit inadvertently, took each other off the track on race day. Peter was quiet, calm and a pleasure to be around regardless of what transpired, an asset to any club and definitely a shining role model for Mark.
Mark steadily progressed within the Junior class and recently had acquired some better equipment and was set for a solid year ahead. Mark, like his father was ever the gentleman and demonstrated maturity well beyond his years, so much so that I was surprised at the recent Christmas party to find out that he was only 14.
Peter and Mark constantly demonstrated the ethos which lies at the heart of karting. Setting out into the unknown and gradually but surely working as a team gaining knowledge in the art of karting both on and off the track. All the time demonstrating the sportsmanship, patience and good humour which led to them being held in such high esteem among other members of the club.
The family will be sorely missed by all.
Be safe out there.
