Another way is to burn them out with an oxy, then cleaning out with a pressure cleaner. Either way they build up with carbon especially if you use a caster oil and it is best to clean them out before it gets too bad and becomes a pain.

Put mix in pipe, tie exhaust with hanger & put exhaust in mix for about 5 days. Pull out(using hanger) & hose off. P.S. if you pull hanger out & there is no exhaust attached your mix is too rich, LOL !!

Never ever use acid. It eats steel away, thereby making your muffler AKA non-compliant - to say nothing of the possible holes that it may leave.
However, soaking in strong caustic soda solution for about a week softens up all the buildup so that the pressure cleaner will blast the residue out. The caustic does not eat steel, but is brutal on aluminium.
As a note of caution, wear some rubber gloves when handling the caustic, it will eat the oil out of your skin, even if only on you for a couple of minutes.

when do you buy the Exhaust pipe cleaner from ?
Permalink Reply by Steve Southwell on February 24, 2012 at 9:38 Hot caustic solution will soften and remove carbon and paint. If you can keep it hot, it works better. BUT, you must be so careful adding the caustic salt to the hot water. It "boils" up and spits . I use a 4ft lenght of capped sewage pipe, which prevents most splatter from leaving the pipe. Wear safety goggles, you will not grow new eyes.
