Qualifying Times or Random Grid. Why not just run qualifying

Why do some clubs run randon grid and some qualifying times. I am NOT a fan of random grids, seems to cause carnage and money with faster karts pushing past slower ones... Random grids wreck a days karting  with slower karts being punted off and faster karts dying of frustration. All big events are done by qualifying times. So why do it... It's good for kart shops..but.. can someone please explain why......???

I agree, I hate random grids.

Prokart have done there saturday night racing with Qualifing for the last 2 years

There heats are you start were you finish

And the final is the points from the heats added to give you a start position.

It works great and rewards consistant driving....

qually adds atleast an extra hour to racing and with alot of clubs running upto 14-15 classes its quicker to go straight to racing, besides to qualify properly you need new tyres

Qualifying rewards fast drivers that can set up for a couple of fast laps but can be a procession during the race.

Random draw rewards drivers that can still drive fast in traffic. This is a skill in its self and rewards these drivers. It requires you to set your kart up slightly different. This will maek for better drivers.

I guess it realy comes down to weather you are in karting to win or to race.

Do you realy think learning to pass is so bad??

Any of the good drivers seem to be able come thru the field, this just show real skill. surely this is the idea of club days?? to hone all your skills, not just drive off from p1.

Just my oppinion thou.

Random grids provides the opportunity to develop race craft, passing etc. That is how the champs learnt years ago. Serve your apprenticeship, improve all aspects of your racing on the way up.

David, some of your points i agree with but are those benefits worth it.

Why don't they do random grids in major meets to find the best and to stop the best running away with races...??

The skilled do get thru the pack I agree and it can be great practice for them. I question the benefit to other less skilled drivers who are hit or knocked off the track through their lack of skills/experience and that race is over for them. Not to mention the potential cost if they are punted out of the way. How does this system of random grid help ..??

When a driver progressess his skill and qualifiy higher aren't they then matched to people of similar speed that they can dice with creating the skills mentioned...??

I truly can't understand  how random grids benefit all karters. If you want to practice overtaking, then

qualify slow and go for it. When people are forced to do that due to random grids, they seem to get very frustrated and push and sometimes punt to get thru the field. Eastern creek is called carnage creek in Newcastle due to random grids...??

Can an offical or someone who actually decides if it's random grid or qualifying for a race meeting please tell me why it's done.....??

I didn't relise they were still running random grids at race meetings!!!!

Since we changed at newy we have cut the amount of accidents considerably and this means more time racing less time and money repairing Damage which makes me happier.

Qualifing is combined with the carby session and takes very little time to do as you allready have to run carby session.

I Agree you learn passing with random grids But it is not worth the carnage that is caused when a guy just off his P's lands on pole and the whole field compreses on him into the first turn.

Wow. this guy Peter absolutely read my mind. Terry if you want to see racing, how about firstly developing a track with a wide entrance hairpin, and secondly make the races 30 laps. youll see all sorts of motors coming good early or late, tyre deg, driver fitness so on so on. if that combined with a good track dont show overtaking... a small track with an 8 lap heat certainly isnt terry :) not to mention you get qualfying guru's that cant do their quali times during that race, and vise versa = overtaking.

not only is it a bad system, but to think that on these terrible small tiny australian circuits, we're encouraging RACING. guys, use your heads -  people are going to be quicker, try to pass where you cant = accident. good way to turn people off the sport, discourage safety, promote accidents, driver conflicts, etc etc..

couldnt agree more. quali quali.

PETER DRAIN - have you guys implemented the newcastle performance class?

Eastern Creek and Lithgow still run random grids. Do they always do this or only sometimes..?? They must have a reason for it..??. Does a kart shop run any of these clubs...??? It would be great for their spare parts business if they do...

As has been mentioned, the amount of money we spent in damage last year from starting from the rear of grid in large fields and getting caught up in crashes up ahead or getting cut off by less experienced drivers was ridiculous and all could have been saved by doing a quick qualifying session. I would willingly give up a practice session to have qualifying, and as Peter said drivers will be matched with other drivers with similar skill and will still get the opportunity to develop their overtaking ability. It's not as if a newcomer is going to pole it every race and not get to pass anyone. If a more experienced driver is serious about getting overtaking practice they can skip qually and start from the rear.

This has posed a problem at our meets last year, I was running on a standard motor and kept getting put on pole, cost me a fortune from getting punted and jammed between kart at the first corner, as such I demoted myself to the back of the grid all the time regardless of the random draw to ensure my pocket was safe.

random grid heats and final grid spots based on heat points works best

qualy is boring both for the driver and spectator, the races are boring enough to watch anyway!

nothing wrong with a bit of biff, its racing, part of the fun
