As an addition to Rishi's post, it would be great if some guys with experience would chuck some setup tips like flex length, sprocket etc for the common tracks around NSW like newcastle, wollongong, canberra and lithgow etc
Wollongong:
TAG heavy open, fireball, Arrow X1 chassis, MG reds
Sprocket 79, Max revs 15800
Flex 65mm
Tags:
Butterfly Farm
Tag Light Open on MG Reds
Front 10
Rear 83
Max Revs - 15800
Flex - 85mm
Best Time - 40.64

Gearing in TAG-R is determined by the type of driver you are. There is a window of around 6-7 teeth that seems to work. I will give the metro tracks that I have tested with.
Lithgow TL - 10/78, TH - 10/81, TSH - 10/84, TRL - 11/78, TRH - 11/80, TRSH - 11/83
Wollongong TL - 10/77, TH - 10/80, TSH - 10/82, TRL - 11/79, TRH - 11/81, TRSH - 11/83
Newcastle TL - 10/75, TH - 10/78, TSH 10/80, TRL - 11/76, TRH - 11/78, TRSH 11/80
Canberra TL - 10/73, TH - 10/75, TSH 10/78, TRL - 11/74, TRH - 11/76, TRSH - 11/78
awesome michael. thanks mate.

Permalink Reply by Michael Hazelton on November 14, 2011 at 14:06 The befor mentioned basic setup info. Remembering the gearings i have posted is for low revving the TAG-R engine. I have found that running the engine to around 13000rpm is fastest. Some people need teeth to carry corner speed, but ultimately it is slower.
Rev ranges....
Open Light gear for 15000 rpm max
Open Heavy gear for 15500 rpm max
Rest Light gear for 13500 rpm max
Rest Heavy & Super Heavy gear for 14000rpm max
Tuning tips....
Open Low 1&3/4 to 2; High 1&1/4 to 1&1/2
Rest standard Low 1&3/4; High 1
Rest blocking 1 hole on airbox Low 1&1/4; High 1
Rebuild times....
Piston Open 4hrs - 8hrs max
Piston Rest 10hrs - 25hrs max
Carby - 1 season max
Pipe length....
Open 65mm flex
Rest 85mm flex
Always use flex sealing tube, tape or paste
Plugs...
27 iridium for both
Clutch....
Always spray with degreaser or brake cleaner inside drum after each day of use.
Fuel / Oil....
Caltex Vortex or BP Ultimate / Shell M
16 / 1

I found eastern creek to be at least 2 teeth less than newcastle...but still a lot of testing to be done before i finalise my gearing decision...

Cheers

I dont know EC times as have not raced there for two years, but the new surface pretty much negates all old lap times. The Brain Farley (last weekend) saw TAG-R middle weight doing high 43's, so I would consider a 43.5 for light and a 44.5 for heavy the goal for practice.
Lithgow i do know. I know it so well, that going for a lap time on a practice day is a total waste of time. However, the pace is high 37's for light and low to mid 38's for heavy on a "green" track. The lap records are about 6 tenths or so faster as the track is rubbered in.

Now I just need to get a base setup for the kart so I know where it is at.
The way it was sold to me was how i ran it for my first race around the track and in a kart for that matter in over 18 years, i was able to do consistent 40s and a few 39s.
Cheers
Hi Mik,
Just looking at your gear ratio at Lithgow TAG-R Light, you say 11/78... so am i right in saying equivelant of this with a 10 tooth front sprocket is 10/71??..

Permalink Reply by Michael Hazelton on March 2, 2012 at 11:33 Yes Wayne, correct. These gearing ratio's are the lowest you want to go. This was the testing that I did in 2008/09 for Fireball TAG-R. I have found the trend to more teeth these days by all TAG-R drivers.
I would suggest 10/74 with 85mm flex would be a good starting point, with the aim to get towards 71, with more corner speed.
I think TAG-R karters are piling the teeth on looking for more bottom end. This maybe a trend stemming from Rotax's, but with the restrictor getting up in the revs will actually slow you down off turns, or create "holes" in your power throughout the rev range you are using. Fireballs definitely pull harder when you get them down in the rev range and keep a good steady flow through the corners.
